Conservation and Sustainability Commission
The Town of Vienna embraces its obligation to current and future generations to foster a healthy, safe and sustainable community. The Conservation and Sustainability Commission (CSC) helps the Town achieve these goals by addressing a broad range of energy, environmental and natural resources issues.
The CSC encourages residents, local businesses and the Town government to undertake conservation and sustainable practices. The CSC engages in education and outreach, develops community initiatives and plans and recommends policies and programs to the Town Council. The CSC is made up of 10 resident-members, including two student representatives.
Fall Native Plant Sale
Fall is right around the corner and there is no better place to find all sorts of native plant options for the season than at the Fall Native Plant Sale! Thanks for all those who were able to attend at the Vienna Community Center on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the CSC's Native Tree Giveaway on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Composting at the Vienna Farmers Market
The CSC is proud to announce the start of a composting initiative at the Vienna Farmers Market for the 2024 season. Beginning Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., a booth operated by Veteran Compost will accept food waste to be dropped off for composting.
Composting is a natural process by which organic waste is broken down into rich nutrient soil. If you are interested in composting, consider dropping off your food scraps at the Vienna Farmers Market each Saturday through October, and you will be reducing landfill waste while also reducing harmful greenhouse gases from being emitted into the atmosphere.

For additional information about the Vienna Farmers Market please visit the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna website.

This competition is an opportunity for you to express your thoughts on the environment and share your imagination and art or writing skills.

Preserving and Managing the Town of Vienna’s Tree Canopy
The Conservation and Sustainability Commission undertook a volunteer effort to explore ways the Town of Vienna could enhance its ability to preserve and manage its tree canopy. We looked at how Vienna could retain, replace, and add trees, particularly in light of increasing teardown/new home development throughout the Town. Also find a link to Town’s recently released Urban Tree Canopy Assessment.
