July 7, 2025 - Town Council Approves Our Plan to Play, Vienna’s First-Ever Parks and Recreation Master Plan!
At the July 7 Town Council Meeting, the Council approved Our Plan to Play. This achievement reflects 18 months of collaboration, listening, and thoughtful planning. Thank you to the many residents who helped shape the plan, whether by taking a survey, attending a public meeting, or sharing feedback through a partner organization. Your voices were vital in creating a plan that reflects the needs and aspirations of our community.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to the staff across departments who contributed their time, ideas, and expertise throughout the process.
Once final revisions are made based on Council’s July 7 requests, a final version of the plan will be posted here. Periodic updates on implementation progress will also be maintained on this page.
Development Timeline
What is a Parks & Recreation Master Plan?
A parks and recreation master plan is a strategic, comprehensive document that outlines the long-term vision, goals, and objectives for the development, enhancement, and management of parks, open spaces, events, programs, and recreational facilities within a community. It serves as a roadmap for decision-making, resource allocation, and future development efforts to ensure that the community's recreational needs are met and that recreational system is sustainable and accessible for all residents.
Development of a parks and recreation master plan includes the following:
- Engaging with the community and partnering organizations to understand current and future recreational needs
- Working closely with Town Council, other departments, and partner agencies to identify strengths, challenges, and opportunities
- Systematic evaluation of parks, events, and programs
- Benchmarking against national standards and peer communities
- Establishing long-range vision and goals
- Developing measurable strategies to address gaps between the current system and future vision
