Education Assistance

The Town of Vienna provides all regular full-time employees who have completed their intial probationary period with financial assistance in obtaining their General Education Diploma (GED) and/or college degree. The educational assistance program is administered through the Office of Human Resources. In order to be eligible for this program, an employee must file a request for participation to the Director of Human Resources prior to beginning the educational program. The forms needed to apply for and receive approval of enrollment in college courses are available in that office. The Human Resources Office also maintains all of the records on the program.

General Education Diploma (GED)
For employees who wish to earn their high school diploma, the following is available:

  1. Tuition reimbursement for preparation course in an amount not to exceed the current rate(s) charged by the Fairfax County School System; and
  2. Reimbursement for the cost of the exam(s) taken at an official testing center.

College Degree (Associate, Bachelor and/or Master)
For employees who wish to earn a college degree, the following is available:

  1. Tuition will be reimbursed in an amount not to exceed the current in-state rates charged by George Mason University.
  2. During each calendar year, employees can be reimbursed for up to 18 credit hours.
  3. The Town will not reimburse an employee if he/she is eligible for V.A. funds.
  4. Employees must earn a grade of 'C' or better in order to be eligible for reimbursement.
  5. Courses must be approved in advance.
  6. Employees must retain their full-time employment status for a period of two (2) years after the receipt of tuition reimbursement. Should an employee leave before the two (2)-year period concludes, he/she must repay the tuition reimbursement payments made during the preceding two (2)-year period.
