Limit on Number of Persons in Household
Regulations
Many residential property owners rent part of their house, townhouse or condominium; if they own more than one residence, they may rent the second. Your Vienna Planning and Zoning Department reminds you that the town limits the number of individuals who can live in any residential dwelling.

Town Code
Either a family or family equivalent is permitted to occupy a single-family home, townhouse, condo or apartment. The Town Code defines these terms as follows:
  • A family is one or more persons related by blood or marriage occupying a single housekeeping unit and using common cooking facilities.  No more than two boarders or lodgers, in addition to the persons related by blood or marriage, are permitted.
  • A family equivalent is two or more individuals not related by blood or marriage and not exceeding four person.

Private apartments that are separated from the main dwelling unit and in-law suites are prohibited by the Town Code.
