Cottage Street SW Safe Routes to School sidewalk between Locust Street and Moore Avenue SW
Vienna Elementary School developed a 2012 School Travel Plan after an extensive survey of families with student walkers and input from Fairfax County Public Schools and Town staff. The plan's purpose is to encourage children to walk and bicycle to school; to make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age; and to facilitate planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools.

The Vienna Elementary Travel Plan suggested several projects, with the top priority being construction of new sidewalk, ADA ramps, and crosswalk on the west side of Cottage Street SW between Locust Street and Moore Avenue SW. After endorsement by Vienna Town Council, a VDOT Safe Routes to School grant has been approved for the project.
