What is the Tree Vienna Donation Program?
The Tree Vienna Donation Program is an effort to increase the number and quality of trees in the Town of Vienna and to educate Town residents about the value of trees. The program provides a formal way for residents and businesses to fund and plant trees on Town property.

How can you get involved?
The Tree Vienna Donation Program is primarily a fund to support the purchase and installation of street trees throughout Town.To donate, volunteer, or receive more information, contact the Vienna Parks and Recreation Department at  or call 703-255-6360.
Why should trees be added to public space?
Don't take our word for it, hear it from the professionals.

“The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to 10 room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.” — U.S. Department of Agriculture

“Landscaping, especially with trees, can increase property values as much as 20 percent.” — Management Information Services/ICMA

“One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.” — U.S. Department of Agriculture

“Trees can be a stimulus to economic development, attracting new business and tourism. Commercial retail areas are more attractive to shoppers, apartments rent more quickly, tenants stay longer, and space in a wooded setting is more valuable to sell or rent.” — The Arbor Day Foundation

“Neighborhoods with well-shaded streets can be up to 6–10° F cooler than neighborhoods without street trees, reducing the heat-island effect (see illustration below), and reducing energy needs.” — U.S. Forest Service Center for Urban Forest Research

Anyone can make a donation of any size to the program, but only Vienna residents can request a specific tree species and planting location. Tree costs range from $150 -$275. In addition, the Town budgets money for new trees every year.

Who will plant the trees?
The Town, with help from volunteers, will prepare the site and plant the trees. Please contact the Department of Parks and Recreation if you would like to help.

Contact the Vienna Department of Parks and Recreation at 703-255-6360 or email e-mail.

Who will maintain the trees?

The Town of Vienna maintains the trees; however, we do request that homeowners water trees planted in public rights-of-way in front of their home during the first year of growth.

What types of trees will be planted?
A list of approved tree species is available here. Requests for tree species not on the list will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All trees are 1 1/2-2 inches caliper.

When will trees be planted?
Trees are planted in March and November of each year, ideal months for introducing new plants.

Where will the donated trees be planted?
Trees are planted on Town properties, including street rights-of-way, parks, and other public properties. Donors may choose to have trees planted on Town rights-of-way in front of their house.

Where does my money go?
All donations to the Tree Vienna Donation Program go into an account specifically for funding new trees in public spaces. No matter the amount of your donation, it will be added to the fund until sufficient funds are available to purchase a new tree and the season is right to plant trees.
