Seasonal Services

Seasonal services provided by the Department of Public Works include:

LEAF COLLECTION

In accordance with anti-pollution laws, the burning of leaves is prohibited. Leaf removal is carried out each year by the Public Works Department on a set schedule that is published in the Town calendar and monthly newsletter. Beginning in late fall, leaf-loaders vacuum up piles of leaves that residents have raked to the curbside. For more information, call 703-255-6381.

Leaves placed in clear plastic bags are picked up by trash crews throughout the year (see Trash Regulations).

Please remember that it can be very dangerous to rake leaves into the street. Cars parked on leaf piles may catch on fire, and children playing in the leaves may be struck by a passing vehicle. In addition, leaves may prevent rainwater from reaching storm drain inlets. Rake leaves just to the curbside, not into the street.

MULCH DELIVERY

Ground leaf mulch and wood mulch are available for delivery to town residents free of charge. Orders are taken from December through February. The minimum order for each type of mulch is half a dump-truck load.

To place an order for mulch, please call the Mulch Hotline: 703-255-6388

For more information, call the Public Works Department, 703-255-6382.

Residents may pick up mulch themselves in any amount during posted hours. The mulch is stored on Town property off Beulah Road. Look for the sign, "Free Leaf Mulch & Wood Mulch."

By grinding leaves into recyclable mulch, the Town saves thousands of dollars in landfill fees each year. To save even more, citizens are encouraged to recycle grass clippings as mulch or compost. For how-to information, call the Fairfax County Recycling Hotline, 703-324-5052.

SNOW REMOVAL

Sanding and salting operations begin immediately at the onset of snow and ice. Plowing begins when snow has accumulated two inches or more, with the primary streets listed below receiving top priority:

Beulah Road
Branch Road
Center Street
Cherry Street (Center to Park)
Church Street
Cottage Street
Courthouse Road
Creek Crossing Road
Electric Avenue
Follin Lane
Kingsley Road (Nutley to Cottage)
Lawyers Road
Locust Street (Branch to Park)
Malcolm Road
Maple Avenue
Marshall Road
Nutley Street (Marshall to Malcolm)
Old Courthouse Road
Park Street (Maple to Fardale)
Tapawingo Road (Park to Nutley)

When snowplows are at work, residents are asked not to park on any street posted as a "snow emergency route," and on non-snow emergency routes residents are asked to park only on the side of the street with even-numbered addresses. This parking plan is voluntary but strongly recommended to enable snowplows to maneuver more easily and, therefore, do a more thorough job. The Street Maintenance Division will note any areas where parked cars are creating a problem so that additional alternatives can be developed to improve snow removal in those areas.

Plowing and chemical treatment will continue on the primary and secondary streets until an accumulation of 12 inches is reached. For accumulations greater than 12 inches, the Public Works Department will concentrate on maintaining clear roadways on the primaries until the snow stops and then go on to open up all secondary streets.

Residents who are physically able are requested to shovel sidewalks next to their property for the safety of pedestrians, especially schoolchildren. The Vienna Parks and Recreation Department has established a data base of workers for hire by residents who need help shoveling snow. Individuals and businesses interested in clearing snow from sidewalks and driveways, and persons desiring to hire workers, are invited to register with the "Snow Bank." To sign up and for more information, call Vienna Parks and Recreation at 703-255-6360.

Town businesses that hire snowplows to clear their parking lots are asked to make sure that snow is not piled onto adjoining sidewalks or pushed into the street. This creates a serious hazard for pedestrians.

Residents who can are asked to assist the Water and Sewer Division in clearing ice and snow from fire hydrants near their homes. In case of an emergency, firefighters will be able to respond much quicker if the hydrants are accessible.

During winter weather, please keep water meter enclosures clear of snow and ice. If the meter cannot be read due to obstructions, an estimated bill must be rendered.

For information on town government closings, cancellations and other snow-related items, residents can call the Vienna Newsline, 703-255-6363, 24 hours a day. Also stay tuned to TV and radio stations for updates. The Vienna Community Center follows the Fairfax County Public Schools´ snow schedule. If schools are closed, activities at the Community Center will be canceled.

YARD DEBRIS COLLECTION

Regulations require that yard waste be separated from your regular household trash for transportation to a recycling center. Examples of yard debris include, but are not limited to: grass clippings, leaves, weeds, flowers, plants, straw, hay, etc. It is unlawful to mix yard debris with trash and we rely on our citizens to implement this yard debris collection during the season.

All yard debris must be placed in clear plastic bags or kraft paper bags to allow collection crews to distinguish between these materials and trash. Clear plastic bags and kraft paper yard debris bags are available at most supermarkets, hardware stores, and garden centers. Clear plastic bags are also available for purchase at the Vienna Town Hall as a courtesy to Town residents. These plastic bags and kraft paper bags will help our crews to identify yard debris so that it can be collected properly for segregation and delivery to a yard debris management facility.
