Visitor Information


Located about fifteen miles outside of Washington D.C., Vienna has been able to maintain its distinctive small town friendliness, community spirit and widely cherished traditional values.

Visitors will enjoy the hometown atmosphere of Maple Avenue (Rt. 123) bustling with specialty shops, numerous restaurants, family run businesses and stores. Take a stroll down treelined Historic Church Street, or take a leisurely drive through Vienna's Historic District, including Windover Avenue via Pleasant Street. Visit Freeman House and Museum, originally a residence / general store built in 1859, or walk across the street to Centennial Park, home to an old restored W&OD caboose and bordered by the scenic Washington and Old Dominion Regional Park Trail. There is something for everyone so...come visit, shop and stay for awhile. The Town of Vienna welcomes you.


Other Attractions

Although not located within the Town limits, the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts is a very popular nearby attraction.

VIENNA ATTRACTIONS

COMMUNITY CENTER

The Vienna Community Center provides facilities for many events, such as fashion shows, bazaars, health fairs, plays, and antique exhibits. The Community Center is located at 120 Cherry St., SE. Within the Community Center is Club Phoenix, a Teen Center that is staffed by the Vienna Parks and Recreation Department. Students can enjoy a place of their own in Club Phoenix, including a a billard table, ping-pong tables, jukebox, special events stage, food and drinks, and many fun scheduled special events throughout the year. Club Phoenix is free unless otherwise stated.

FREEMAN HOUSE

Located at the corner of Church and Mill Streets, N.E., the house served at various times as a residence, store, Civil War hospital, railroad station, post office, and fire department. Today, the house contains a museum and old-fashioned general store open to the public on Saturdays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. (closed during January). Group tours may also be arranged.

HISTORIC DISTRICT

The Windover Heights Historic District is located in northwest Vienna. Many of the homes in the district contain distictive architechtural features, were the sites of significant events in the town's history, or belonged to prominent citizens. The "Walk on the Hill" spring garden tour in the historic district is held the last Sunday afternoon in April each year, sponsored by Historic Vienna, Inc., and the residents of the Hill section.

VIENNA CABOOSE

The acquisition and restoration of Vienna's caboose on Church Street alongside the W&OD Trail, and creation of the adjacent Centennial Park, were accomplished as a community project for the Town's 100th anniversary celebration on 1990. Also located on the site is an information kiosk about the caboose and the significance of the railroad in Vienna's history, and the Centennial time capsule, scheduled to be opened in the year 2040. The Fairfax Audubon Society has built a bird and butterfly habitat garden near Centennial Park for the public to enjoy.

PARKS

The Vienna Parks and Recreation Department maintains a variety of parks and playing fields. The four major parks (Northside, Southside, Glyndon, and Meadow Lane) include tennis courts, baseball fields, picnic tables, playground equipment, nature trails, and hiking and biking trails. The pavilions at Glyndon and Meadow Lane Parks may be reserved for picnics.

A spring garden tour in the historic district held the last Sunday afternoon in April.

May

Viva! Vienna!

The annual ViVa! Vienna! Town Festival is held on Church Street on Memorial Day weekend. Festivities include arts and crafts vendors, live music, food and beverage sales, children's entertainment, a special Memorial Day ceremony, and booths showcasing Vienna area businesses and community service organizations. July

July 4th Celebration

A super observance of our nation's birthday is held each July 4 on the Vienna Community Center grounds. The day's activities include a flea market of arts and crafts, food and drink, music, family games, children's entertainment, antique and classic car display, and of course, fireworks. October

Halloween Parade

One of Vienna's most popular community events, the parade is held on Maple Avenue the Wednesday evening before Halloween each year (except when Halloween falls on Thursday, in which case the parade is held the preceding week). In addition to marching bands, floats, and other entries, children are invited to walk in the parade in their Halloween costumes.

November

Holiday Stroll

The annual Holiday Stroll on historic Church Street is held the Monday evening after Thanksgiving. Church Street is closed to vehicular traffic between Lawyers Road and Mill Street, and visitors are invited to stroll along the street amid the sights and sounds of the holiday season. Santa Claus greets children at the Freeman House.
