The Most Frequently Asked Questions of Public Works

  1. What should I do before calling for a Special Pickup? First, place your debris and/or brush out at the curb in front of your house in separate piles, and then call the special pickup line at 703-255-5727. Leave your name, (please spell it), your address, telephone number, and the type of debris. We will come by within one to ten working days to pick up the debris. Please note: Contractor generated material will not be picked up. Due to leaf collection, there are no special pickups during the months of October, November or December.

  2. Why won't you take my large branches or logs? Branches or logs of a diameter greater than 6 inches and more than 8 feet in length cannot be picked up because they are too large for our equipment to process. Private haulers may be able to dispose of this material for you.

  3. How can I dispose of hazardous materials? Hazardous waste can be taken to the Farifax County Citizens' Recycling and Disposal Facility located at 4618 West Ox Road. Their hours of operations are, Thursday, 1:00-5:00 p.m.; Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call 703-324-5068 for further information.

  4. Will my trash be picked up on holidays? July 4th, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day are the only holidays the trash crews do not work because the transfer facility is closed. Your trash or recycling will be picked up on the next regular pick up day. They will pick up your trash or recycling on all of the other holidays.

  5. What day will you be picking up my trash? Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays of each week are for the collection of household garbage and yard waste only. Garbage may be placed in cans or bags. Yard waste to include grass, leaves, acorns, walnuts, tree vegetation, and hedge clippings, must be bagged in clear plastic or kraft paper bags. Please seperate these yard waste bags from the regular trash, no more than 40 pounds per bag, with a 20 bag maximum. Have your cans and bags at the front curb by 7:00 a.m. If you have any questions, please call 703-255-6382. In the event of inclement weather -- snow, ice, hurricane, etc. -- trash will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled pickup day.

  6. What day do you pick up the recycling? Thursday and Fridays are for recycling only. Brush must be bundled and cut in four-foot lengths. The diameter for brush collected in bundles is limited to 1 1/2 inches. Newspapers, flattened cardboard, catalogs, junk mail, telephone books and mixed paper are to be placed in a brown paper bag (not plastic bags) or bundled with cord. All cans, bottles, and plastic jug-type material, aluminum foil & pie plates, must be placed together in a see-through plastic bag. All recycling must be placed out at the curb by 7:00 a.m. If you have any questions, please call 703-255-6382. In the event of inclement weather -- snow, ice, hurricane, etc. -- recycling will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled pickup day.
