Lateral Transfers

CURRENT OFFICERS

Are you currently employed as a police officer in another jurisdiction? Or serving as one in the armed forces? Then you could be eligible to become a member of the Vienna Police Department through our Lateral Officer Program.

If you are currently certified as an officer in another state or U.S military, your application will be evaluated for employment by the Town of Vienna on a case-by-case basis based on your experience and training. You will be required to meet the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services requirements for certification and then attend our Public Safety Academy’s Lateral Transfer Course. This Lateral Transfer Course is approximately 9 weeks in length instead of the normal 26 weeks.
In order to apply for this program, you must have a minimum of 2 years of certified law enforcement experience
No rank or seniority will be transferred.
After successful completion of the Lateral Training Course, you as an officer candidate must then complete up to four (4) months of field training.

Candidates selected under this program can receive up to a three-step increase in salary over the base salary, depending on experience level.
Successful certified Virginia officers may be eligible for a signing bonus.
Outstanding benefit program.
Must have law enforcement experience responsible for and perform police patrol duties in a full time capacity in a recognized law enforcement agency.
Must be a non-probationary officer with a current law enforcement certification that is issued or recognized and approved by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
